Most bamboo bedding brands sell their bamboo products with a thread count as low as 150 and as high as 400. However, with a bit of research, you will discover that the happy median is 300. Bamboo bed sheets claiming any higher thread counts than this range are usually blends, and are typically far cheaper in quality. You’ve been warned! Bigger numbers doesn’t always mean better. If you see a “1000 Collection” Bamboo bedding, you will most likely discover that the primary material is microfiber, with just a small percentage being Bamboo Viscose. If you have any sense of pride in your bedding, avoid these sneaky “blends” like the plague.
It doesn’t matter what the Thread Count was on your Egyptian Cotton. A 300TC Bamboo bedding set will always be softer than higher cotton thread counts. Even a 1200TC Egyptian Cotton. No offense to cotton, but Bamboo has a natural advantage in regards to comfort. Bamboo is also meant to be breathable, so adding the extra weight and density of adding more threads is actually counter productive.
Even the cotton industry is discovering that a set of “long staple cotton”, or “Supima Cotton”, with a thread count of 300, can be far more comfortable than another cotton option with a thread count over 1000. It’s the quality of the yarn, not the number of threads.
In conclusion: Thread count was all the hype, but in today’s market it no longer matters. Textile technologies have come so far – though many of which still date back to the mid-1800s – that the quality of source material is just as, or more important, than thread count.
